Bill Tucker
(Executive Director, Research Administration and Technology Transfer)

Bio

Dr. Tucker was born in the UK and educated in Australia. He holds a B. Sc. (Hons) and a Ph. D. in Microbiology from the University of Queensland. He also holds an MBA degree from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. Dr. Tucker’s scientific career focused on agricultural biotechnology after which he transitioned into technology management with companies such as Advanced Genetic Sciences, DNA Plant Technology, Applied Biosystems, Celera Genomics and Paradigm Genetics. In 2003, Dr. Tucker joined the Office of Technology Transfer at the University of California, Office of the President, in Oakland CA. Since 2004, Dr. Tucker has been the Executive Director, Research Administration and Technology Transfer at UCOP.

Greg Horowitt
(Executive Director, Global CONNECT)

Bio

Greg Horowitt is the co-founder and Executive Director of Global CONNECT, based at the University of California, San Diego. He is a key thought leader in the field of ‘innovation systems’, and their relevant applications for sustainable regional economic development through technology commercialization. In addition, Greg is also the founding Managing Director of T2 Venture Capital; a seed stage venture firm focused on the commercialization of intellectual property out of leading research institutions, (academic public, and private), and government funded agency programs. Prior to founding Global CONNECT, Greg was the interim Director of the regional CONNECT program in San Diego. Greg’s background has been in executive management, where he held key positions at a Berkshire Hathaway company for nearly 20 years, served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at a leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm, and was the CEO of a venture-backed enterprise software company.

Meg Arnold
(Director, Business Development & Entrepreneurship at UC Davis InnovationAccess)

Bio

Meg Arnold is the Director of Business Development & Entrepreneurship at UC Davis InnovationAccess, and has developed numerous programs to foster entrepreneurship on campus and in the Sacramento region. Meg came to UC Davis in 2002 as Manager, Entrepreneur Development at UC Davis CONNECT, and was promoted to Director, UC Davis CONNECT in 2005. In March, 2007, UC Davis CONNECT became UC Davis InnovationAccess, in an expansion of UC Davis's commitment to entrepreneurship on campus. Reflecting this commitment, a fundamental shift in UC Davis’s approach to startup companies and entrepreneurship has generated nearly 20 new start-up companies from research activities underway on campus. Before joining UC Davis, Meg spent ten years in the telecommunications industry, working primarily in strategic planning and business development for AT&T Canada, in Toronto, and British Telecom (BT), in London. In these roles, her work focused on mergers and acquisitions, strategic and joint ventures; in addition, at BT she worked to coordinate a single product platform for Internet-based business services across Europe. She was also involved with the then-largest telecom acquisition in Canada, and the corporate restructuring and spin-off program of BT in 2001-02. Meg has an MBA in Finance from the University of San Francisco, and a BA in English from Cornell University.

Charles L. Baecker
(Director, Beall Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at UC Irvine)

Bio

As Administrative Director for the Don Beall Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at The Paul Merage School of Business located on the campus of UC Irvine, Mr. Baecker is responsible for campus-wide programs providing education, inspiration and opportunity to students, researchers and faculty interested entrepreneurship. Drawing on his over 25 years experience in the Southern California computer and software industry working in senior marketing and sales roles for such companies as Prime Computer, Wonderware Software and JD Edwards, Charlie has demonstrated a distinct talent for successfully divining the needs of emerging markets and husbanding the development of new classes of product where none had previously existed. He was instrumental in the development of several break-through software products; most notably, NetDDE from Wonderware Software, which was the first widely distributed Windows peer-to-peer networking solution in the world and was subsequently licensed to Microsoft for inclusion in all versions of Microsoft Windows. In 1994 NetDDE was lauded as Product of the Year by the American Electronics Association. Today, this product can be found on over a billion Windows desktops throughout the world. At Wonderware Charlie was part of the team that took the company public in 1993 producing a capitalization in excess of $300 million. Charlie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Southern California and a Master in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
